Page Turner vs. forScore and MobileSheets
forScore and MobileSheets are popular sheet music apps: full libraries where a musician keeps, organizes, and marks up their own scores. Page Turner does one job: it keeps a whole group on the same page, on whatever devices they have. Here's how they compare, and when each is the better fit.
At a Glance
| Page Turner | forScore | MobileSheets | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Runs on | Any device with a modern web browser: iPad, iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac, Chromebook | Apple devices: iPad, iPhone, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro | Android, Windows, iPad and iPhone, and Mac |
| Cost | Free | A one-time App Store purchase that covers up to ten of your own Apple devices, with an optional Pro subscription | A paid app, bought separately for each platform (with a free trial on some) |
| To get started | Nothing to install and no account needed: open the link, scan the QR code, or type the room code | Install the app on each device | Install the app on each device |
| Group page turns | Built in: one leader turns pages for any number of followers, nearby or anywhere over the internet. With parts, each section reads its own part, with its own page turner | Cue: one leader turns pages and changes pieces on nearby devices running forScore, over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth | Connect Tablets: one leader controls nearby tablets running MobileSheets (any number over Wi-Fi, up to seven over Bluetooth); synced page turns are optional |
| Getting the music to everyone | The leader uploads it once and every device in the room gets it | Each player keeps the music in their own forScore library | The leader loads a song or set list and connected tablets load the same one; libraries can be synced over Wi-Fi or a cloud folder |
| Repeats and codas | The leader writes a piece's play order once, like 1-3, 2-3, 4-6, and every device's turns follow it through repeats and codas | Links: tap a marked spot to jump back to where a repeat begins | Link points to tap, or a page order set for each song that repeats pages |
| Library and annotation | No full library: rooms last 24 hours after a piece was last added or shown, and saved set lists keep their pieces and marks, on the device or in an optional account. The leader can draw on the music, and everyone in the room sees the marks. | A full personal library, set lists, and rich annotation | A full personal library, set lists, and annotation |
| Without internet | Needs a connection to open a room; after that, saved pieces keep working if the Wi-Fi drops | Works offline, and Cue doesn't need an internet connection | Works offline, and connects tablets directly over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth |
When Page Turner Is the Better Fit
- Your group uses a mix of devices. Android tablets, iPads, phones, and laptops all join the same room in their browsers.
- Not everyone has, or wants to buy, an app. Substitutes, students, guest singers, and church volunteers can follow along in seconds with nothing to install.
- The leader brings the music. Upload the set list once and everyone has it, instead of making sure every library matches.
- You're not in the same room. Rooms work over the internet, so a teacher and student on a video call, or players in different places, stay on the same page.
- Sections read different parts. Add a part for each section, each with its own page turner, and switch pieces for the whole group at once.
- You want it free. There's nothing to buy for the leader or anyone following.
Looking for a forScore Alternative for Android or Windows?
forScore runs only on Apple devices, so its Cue page turns can't reach the Android tablets, Windows laptops, or Chromebooks in a mixed group. MobileSheets runs on more platforms, but it's a paid app that every player has to install before the first rehearsal. Page Turner runs in any current web browser, which makes it a free forScore alternative for group page turns: every device joins the same room, whatever it is, and follows one leader.
It doesn't replace a personal library. If you already keep your scores in forScore or MobileSheets, keep them there and use Page Turner when the group plays, as described in Using Them Together.
Groups that often have a mix of devices include choirs, worship teams, school ensembles with Chromebooks, and community orchestras. For the hardware, see choosing a tablet for sheet music and the guide to Bluetooth page-turner pedals.
When forScore or MobileSheets Is the Better Fit
- You're building a personal library of scores to keep, organize, and search for years.
- Each musician marks up their own copy with fingerings, breath marks, and cuts that stay with them.
- There's no internet at all where you play and no time to open the room beforehand.
- You play mostly alone, where a group page-turning room adds nothing.
Using Them Together
Page Turner only needs a PDF, so it works alongside a library app. Keep and mark up your music wherever you like, share or export the pieces as PDFs, and open them in a Page Turner room when the group plays. Organizing the files? See how to organize a set list for a gig.
Try Page Turner
It's free, with no account needed and nothing to install. Upload a PDF to start a room, or try the sample piece.
