Sheet Music in Sync for Pit Orchestras and Musicals
From the first sing-through to tech week, Page Turner keeps the vocal book on every cast member's tablet in step with the music director, and lets players who share a book follow one turner. Each number in the show is a piece in the set list, so jumping from the overture to Act 2 takes one tap.
How It Works for Pit Orchestras and Musicals
- The music director uploads the score, one PDF per number (
01 Overture.pdf,02 Opening.pdf…), and becomes the leader. - Cast members and players open the room by QR code, link, or room code, with no accounts or app.
- The music director turns pages with a tap or a pedal from the keyboard, and every screen follows. Late arrivals start on the current page.
- To run a number, tap it in the set list, or use Next Piece ▶ to go through the show in order.
Setup Tips for Pit Orchestras and Musicals
- Give each book its own part. The cast can all read the vocal book. For the pit, add a part for each book (Keyboard 1, Reed 1, Trumpet…) in ☰ → Set List → + Add a Part. Players choose theirs when they join, players who share a book choose the same part, and a part nobody leads turns its own pages.
- Name files in show order so the set list matches the running order. The set list guide covers naming and numbering.
- Set each number's repeats once. In ☰ → Repeats & Jumps, type the pages in the order they're played, and every turn follows the repeats and D.S. markings. See repeats and codas in digital sheet music. For a vamp or a last-minute cut, the leader types a page number and every screen jumps there.
- Use Dark Stage in the pit. It shows light notes on black, so tablets don't light up the pit during the show.
- Don't count on theater Wi-Fi. Open the room on every device before rehearsal and check that every number is saved; saved music keeps working if the signal drops, and everyone catches up when it returns.
- Start a fresh room each rehearsal day. A room closes 24 hours after a number was last added or shown, so keep the PDFs in one folder you can upload again.
Questions From Music Directors
Can the cast see the cuts I've made?
Yes. Open ☰ → Annotate and mark cuts, breaths, and new lyrics in the vocal book, and every cast member sees them as you draw. Save the set list to keep the marks for the next rehearsal, in every book. See how to mark up sheet music on a tablet.
Will the tablets light up the pit during the show?
Turn on Dark Stage on each device and turn the brightness down. The stage and outdoors guide covers dim pits, heat from the lights, and keeping tablets charged through a long show.
How do we keep the book from one rehearsal to the next?
In ☰ → Set List, tap Save This Set List. Each day, start the rehearsal's room from it on the home page, and tap Update Saved Set List after adding cuts or new numbers so the next day starts from the latest version. In a room with parts, every book is saved with it.
Can actors look ahead to their next entrance?
Yes. Anyone following can swipe to peek ahead or back on their own screen, and it returns to the music director's page after 30 seconds.
Before You Share Music
Musicals are usually rented with a license that sets how the score may be copied and shared. Check your licensing agreement with the rights holder before putting the books on tablets.
